Notes for: Elizabeth Grant

Notes on Elizabeth (Betsy) Grant

1857 - Sailed to Australia under the name Betsy Young (Passenger List for the ship "Vocalist" 1857) with her mother Sarah Young, (Sarah had used her first marriage surname) and older sister Eliza Ann who used the surname "Grant".
James Grant was deceased prior to the family sailing to Australia, Elizabeth had noted that her father was William Young as noted on the Passenger List for the "Vocalist" 1857. Elizabeths older sister Eliza Ann was also on board and had noted that her father was James Grant and was dead, William Young could not have been Elizabeths father as William Young was in NSW, plus the fact that Elizabeth was born five days after the 1841 UK Census and her father is listed as James Grant. The only reason I can think for the change in Elizabeths fathers name is that there might have been a reduced passenger fee if family was living in Sydney. Either that or William went back to England after he completed his sentence and had an affair with Sarah while she was still married to James Grant, then William sailed back to NSW. (The mind Boggles)
