Death Certificate of daughter Catherine Byrne (nee Killooley) notes John Gilhooley [sic], occupation: Labourer Note (2) Noted as being deceased on daugthers immigration documents Note (3) In the company of her daughter Catherine and her son in law Thomas Byrne and their children John and Mary Ann, Catherine emigrated to Australia as an Assisted Immigrant, leaving from Southhampton England aboard the vesfel "MARY ANN". Assisted Immigrants (Board List) 1857 Ship “MARY ANN” List of Immigrants per Ship “Mary Ann”, as inspected by the Immigration Board, on Widow on Embarkation Name: Killooley Catherine -Age: 50 yrs -Calling: Widow -Native place and Country: Mullingar, Westmeath -Parents names, and, if alive, their Residence: Henry Rose, Kilva Rose, both dead -Religious Denomination: RC -Read or Write: read -Relations in the Colony: Son Patrick living at Bombala -State of Bodily health, strength, and probable usefulness: good -Any complaints regarding treatment on board this Ship: none -Remarks by Immigration Board: Remitt Regd She arrived in Sydney Australia. Immediately on arrival the ship was placed into quarantine due to an outbreak of measles, and stayed there for eight days. Note (4) It seems strange that no family member acted as the informant on Catherines DC as her daughter Catherine was supposed to be also living in the Rocks at the time of her mothers death, and some basic family information has not been included on the DC. It appears that the informant was the minster who officiated at the funeral and was also the witness to the burial, no family member having witnessed the burial. Catherine’s married surname has been spelt Gilhooley [sic] on her DC. Catherine had stated her age as being Fifty years on the Board List in 1857 putting her DOB at c.1807 whereas her DC states her age at death as being Eighty years as at 1870 putting her DOB at 1790 - I've spilt the difference and gone c.1800 until proven otherwise. Note (5) Headstone Inscription - None Known, this part of the cemetery was bulldozed circa 1970's so I have been told. They thought it easier to do this then clean it up by hand. Note (6) Nose short and cocked, scar on left eyebrow. Another over same. Large brown natural mark on back of lower arm. Scar on palm of right hand. Note (7) Anne married William Campbell in St Marys Church Sydney, the ceremony being performed by Francis Murphy in the presence of Patrick McCourt and Elizabeth Dunne who acted as witnesses. Their abode at the time of the wedding was in Sydney. It appears that Anne and William settled in various places, Sydney, Goulbourn and finally in Bombala where they lived on various stations. They had fourteen children of which eight survived, six being baby deaths. The children were: Catherine b.12 /7/1846, Mary Anne b.21/12/1848, Jane b.5/11/1850, John b.17/12/1853, William b. 4/10/1855, Patrick b.21/9/1857, Rose b.15/7/1859 and Charles b.15/6/1864. Note (8) The following information is no longer relevant if Patrick died in 1849 but I am leaving it in his profile incase his death listed in the Convict Muster is a mistake. - At the time of his mother and sisters arrival in 1857, his mother stated that he was living in Bombala NSW, whereas his sister (Ann) stated that he was living in Sydney NSW. Note (9) Birth Certificate of son Thomas states Catherine was born in the County of Meath Ireland, whereas the birth certificate of son Robert notes Catherine was born in County of Westmeath. The immigration documents notes she was born in County of Westmeath Ireland. Note (10) Unable to identify the graves of Catherine and Thomas Byrne as this area of the cemetery was cleaned up many years ago and most traces of grave surrounds and headstones were destroyed or removed. Information provided by the Cemetery Staff. Thomas and his wife Catherine are both buried in this grave. Their eldest son John and their grandson William J Luck are both buried in the next grave, number 91. Headstone Inscription - Removed/Destroyed Note (11) Death Certificate noted place of marriage as being Meath Ireland.
