(Copy on File) Event Notes Note (1) Joseph and Elizabeth left Plymouth England with their two children, Louisa and Elizabeth on 15 May 1853 aboard the "CALPHURNIA" (Barque, 722 tons, George Geere - Ships Master) arriving Melbourne Australia on the 13 August 1853 then onto Sydney NSW. (First Port of call was Melbourne so all passenger detail was recorded in Melbourne.) Name and Descriptions of Passengers Ports of Embarkation: London Names of Passengers and Ages: Luck Joseph 27, Luck Elizabeth 24, Luck Louisa 4, Elizabeth 1. Profession/Occupation: Sailmaker, Wife, child, child infant English/Scottish/Irish: English Port at which Passengers contracted to land: Sydney Note (2) Frazers Lane was early on called Surrey Lane, then Brown Bear Lane, varied with Essex Lane and Fraser's Lane. It was called Little Essex Street from 1875 until its demise in 1908 when George Street was widened. Brown Bear was the name of an Inn. (Information sourced from the City of Sydney web site - street name search) Note (3) Also known as a Mariner. Note (4) Joseph was employed to remove stone ballast from a Lighter which sunk at Newcastle NSW. A quote from The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser - District News from Newcastle Thursday 18 December 1862 - Page 3 reads: A Lighter loaded with stone ballast, belonging to the Steam Lighterage Company, sank on Saturday week last, no person being on board. Mr. Joseph Luck, the diver for Mr. Lockart, of Sydney, is now engaged in getting up the ballast. The Lighter is expected to float when completely unladed. Note (5) At the time of his son William Richard Lucks birth there were 2 boys and 4 girls living. Note (6) Joseph recovered the body of Henry Mount who accidently drowned off Circular Quay on the 9th December 1868. A Newspaper article inserted by the victims father reflects his appreciation for the assistance given by Joseph. Quote - To Mr. Joseph Luck, Diver. - SIR, - Allow me to return you my sincere thanks for your prompt and disinterested recovery of the body of my son Henry, accidently drowned off Circular Quay on the 9th instant, and my heartfelt acknowledgements for your generous assistance, in a pecuniary way, on the same distressing occasion. Henry Mount - Harrington-street, 11th December, 1868. End Quote Note (7) Joseph was listed on the Crew / Passenger list for the Brig "Lady Alicia" inward bound from the South Pacific Island port of Rotumah. Note (8) Information provided by a descendant (Brian Sykes) of Joseph's mentions that Joseph was involved with the construction of the Harbour Retaining wall which encompasses Cicular Quay in Sydney. This could be substantiated by the fact that Joseph's occupation at the time of his death was listed as a Diver. Note (9) Information provided by a descendant (Brian Sykes) of Joseph’s mentions that Joseph was involved with the construction of the Harbour Retaining wall which encompasses Cicular Quay in Sydney. This could be substantiated by the fact that Joseph’s occupation at the time of his death was listed as a Diver. Note (10) The funeral took place at Josephs residence. Note (11) Also buried in this grave is his wife Eliza Ann Luck (nee Grant), George W Burns and Robert E Luck. Headstone Inscription - Not transcribed Note (12) Listed at this address also is her daughter Louisa Hawkins aged two, there is no indication who Louisa's father might be as Elizabeths occupation might not have kept a list of her clients. Tower Hamlets is located on the Thames River at London, sailing ships came and went regularly and taking into account Elizabeths occupation it might never be known who Louisa's father was. Note (13) Elizabeth is buried with her daughter Elizabeth Luck.
