Note (2) 1897 - Information from the Public Services List of 1897, Colonial Treasurers Department, page 39, indicates that William was employed by the Public Service. His first appointment commencing on the 24 Feb 1896 (employment type unknown). He changed positions on the 1 Nov 1896 to the Mercantile Explosives at Middle Harbour as a Warder on a salary of One hundred and five pounds, with allowances in the nature of salary for Quarters of Twenty five pounds. Information from the Public Services List of 1913, Colonial Treasurers Department, page 45 states that he again changed positions on the 1 Feb 1902, this time as a boatman in the Lighterage and Steam Service on a salary of One hundred and Fourty four pounds. William may have again changed positions back to being a Warder sometime after this last appointment as his Death Certificate indicates that his occupation was that of a Warder. Note (3) 1897 - Information from the Public Services List of 1897, Colonial Treasurers Department, page 39, indicates that William was employed by the Public Service. Note (4) "Brights Disease" - a kidney disorder first described by a British Physician Richard Bright (1789-1858). Brights disease is also called Glomerulonephritis or Nephritis. Note (5) William is buried in grave 1054 Headstone Inscription - In Loving Memory of William Richard Luck who died 25th September 1913, aged 46. Sacred Heart of Jesus have Mercy on his Soul. Erected by his loving Son Joseph Luck. Also Gertrude Luck beloved wife of the above. Died 15th April 1930, aged 58 years. Also June Luck beloved Grand-Daughter of the above. Died 6th Nov 1933, aged 6 years. Also interred is James Robert Ernest Luck son of William and Gertrude. I can only assume that William was buried in a Catholic cemetery due to his wife being Catholic and they may have previously made plans for their interrments. His wife was interred in 1930. Note (6) Death Certificate of daughter Gertrude noted her fathers occupation was a Fireman. Note (7) This marriage may have been rushed considering the birthdate of their first born, Gertrude on 27 Apr 1888. The witness Mary Ann McDonald (nee Byrne) was Gertrude’s elder sister. Note (8) Abercrombie Lane runs off George St Sydney. Note (9) Interesting to note on the Electoral Roll that Gertrudes occupation was as a Labourer. Note (10) The address noted was Gertrudes residence. Note (11) Headstone Inscription - In Loving Memory of William Richard Luck who died 25th September 1913, aged 46. Note (12) The witness to the cremation was Warwick Taylor (me). Note: Inquest dispensed with at Sydney, on the 12th June 1970, by Keith Schirmer, under Delegation from Kevin Maurice Waller, City Coroner, and Coroner for New South Wales. Note (13) Reason for delay in placing ashes in the Memorial Wall was that her son Lawrence kept them at his home. Ashes were not discovered until his death. Both Gertrude, her son Lawrence and daughter Gloria are interred in the same wall. Headstone/Plaque Inscription - In Loving Memory of Our Dear Mother Gertrude E. Sykes Died 3rd May 1970 Aged 83 years. Note (14) Born - Alfred John Seitz / Sykes, birth registration appears under both surnames in the NSW BDM register. No explanation for the dual surnames...originally thought surname changed due to outbreak of WW1 and Johns father being of Danish/German background but the names changed well before this when John was born in 1884. Johann Jochim Seitz used the surnames Seitz, Scharmer and Sykes. John's marriage certificate has noted on it that his fathers name was John Henry Sykes. Note (15) Note: John Alfreds fathers name is shown as John Henry Sykes and not Johann Jochim Seitz. Consent of Gertrudes father William R Luck had to be given as Gertrude was under 21 years of age. Witnesses to the marriage were Patrick Byrnes (sic) and Mary Ann McDonald (nee Byrne) who were Gertrudes Uncle (or Cousin) and Aunty. Note (16) Died aged 3 months Note (17) William is buried with his Uncle, John Byrne and beside their grave is Williams grandparents Thomas and Catherine Byrne. Note (18) This address was Ethels usual address immmediately prior to her death. Note (19) Duration of Illness: Myocardial Infarction - Hours Bronchopneumonia - Days Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease - Years Note (20) Research has shown that John may have served as an Officer in the Naval Reserve even thou he was very young. Note (21) Mary appears to have been using the surname Luck prior to her marriage to John, she is noted as being Mary Veronica Luck in the 1936 Electoral Roll for West Sydney. Note (22) James is interred beside his parents William and Gertrude, also interred is June P Luck, William and Gertrudes granddaughter. Note (23) Donald is interred in Grave 1430, three of his children are interred in Grave 1431. Note (24) Roy may have been killed by friendly fire. There is a sealed envelope in his Service Records at the Australian Archives which may have something to do with his death.
