Informant: R Harrison, daughter, of 20 Canterbury Place Norwich Norfolk England. (Copy on File) Event Notes Note (1) Isaac was a Widow at the time of the 1881 Census Note (2) St. Giles’s Hospital, founded in 1249 by Bishop Walter Suffield as a religious institution to relieve the suffering of the poor of Norwich. The Great Hospital, as it is now known, has, over nearly eight centuries gone through many stages reflecting changing religious, medical and social attitudes. Isaac was noted as being an Inmate of the Hospital. Note (3) Husband was listed as being a Widow in the 1881 Census Note (4) These Census's noted Mary Ann as being born in two different locations. 1851 UK Census states born in Norwich Norfolk 1861 UK Census states born in Bury Suffolk 1871 UK Census states born in Norwich Norfolk Note (5) Cordwainer is similar to a Shoemaker Note (6) Witness to Charles death was his daughter Rosetta Harrison. Rosetta's name appears as Rosetta T Ward in this database, as she was born and appeared with that name in the Census's prior to the marriage of Charles Turner to Anna Maria Ward. Note (7) Her first name Anna does appear on some documents as Hannah or is missing altogether and only uses the name Maria. Note (8) This marriage took eleven years to find. As can be seen Anna Maria Ward married under the name Hannah Maria Ward SMITH for some unknown reason. I have discounted the theory that she had the name Smith from a previous marriage as all her children up until 1871 were registered in the Census's as having the surname Ward. One of the witness's to the marriage is Clementina Burton who could be the older sister of Charles. The other witness is Isaac Turner who could be Charles father or another relation. The Notes below appear on Anna Maria Ward's profile and explain why Charles Turner is not listed as the father for the children born before he married Anna in 1877, I cannot find any documentation to say he was the father so far (as at 6/11/2007) First seven children appear to be born out of marriage. Anna was the Head of the family according to the 1871 Census and noted as being UNmarried, the census also lists six children all with the surname Ward, indicating that she had not married Charles Turner at that time, which did not happen until 1877. As at 1871 Charles Turner was still living with his parents.Turner surname does not appear until at least 1877 with the birth of Beatrice Turner which is confirmed on her Birth Certificate.
