(Copy on File) Event Notes Note (1) 1824 - 1825 General Muster List of NSW 1823, 1824, 1825 notes that Alfred was under the employ of the Prisoner Barracks (Hyde Park Barracks) in Sydney. Note (2) MELVILLE ISLAND 1824 - 1829 - Sometime during this period convict Alfred Abbott volunteered his services to Melville Island, off Northern Australia. No doubt his trade skills were required to assist in the construction of a new Military Outpost at Fort Dundas on Apsley Strait (near Pirlangimpi) under the command of Bremer. This was the first British settlement in North Australia. All this time the Kiwi aborigines kept the British besieged in a small area around the fort. In September 1826 the first Buffalo was brought into the Fort, and finally in March 1829 Fort Dundas was abondoned - largely due to the Kiwi hostility. It is now the Catholic mission at Garden Point. He may have been given the opportunity to reduce his sentence by working on Melville Island, as on 20 June 1829 he was granted his Ticket of Leave. Note (3) The source for this address was the Convict Muster undertaken on the 31 December 1837 and was for Ann Collins, Alfreds wife and not for Alfred Abbott. Note (4) The source document actually notes the abode was at Emu Plain and not Emu Plains. Note (5) The Sydney Morning Herald - 9 September 1848, notes Alfred as having unclaimed letters at the General Post Office Sydney. His residence was noted as being Camperdown. Note (6) Alfred's son William had listed his fathers occupation on his marriage certificate as a Builder even thou he had passed away in 1857. Note (7) Alfred's son Alfred George had listed his fathers occupation on his marriage certificate as a Bricklayer even thou he had passed away in 1857. Note (8) This was Alfreds occupation listed on his daughter Selinas death certificate in 1893. Note (9) NSW Marriage Banns 1826-1841 ABBOTT Alfred 28 Mangles FS COLLINS Mary aka Ann 20 Roslyn Castle 1830 Bond Note (10) 31 Oct 1831 - Alfred married a bonded convict by the name of Ann Collins (aka Mary). The marriage was granted by the Governor under the authority of Banns by the Church of England at St. Johns Church in Parramatta. Note (11) Williams birth place is noted as being Penrith NSW on the birth certificate of his second born child, son Alfred John, the informant was Wiliams wife Elizabeth (nee Morgan). All other childrens birth certificates only note Sydney as being the birth place of William. Williams baptism took place in Sydney and the abode noted as being Sussex Street Sydney. Note (12) Listed in the Parliamentary Return of Landholders Index - 1885 was the following details - Located in Concord, Name of Occupier William Abbott, Acreage 2, No. of horses 2, No. of pigs 2. Note (13) William was found dead in Mrs Walkers Bush. No cause of death noted, may have been from natural causes as an inquest was considered unnecessary. Mrs Walkers bush was a property near where William and his family lived. Amelia Sophia Clarke again appears as William's mother on his death certificate. Note (14) William was found dead in Mrs. Walkers bush which was a property close to where William lived. Note (15) Due to housing development in Concord this Cemetery was moved, graves were exhumed and moved to Rookwood Cemetery in 1938. No record could be found for the grave of William at Rookwood Roman Catholic Cemetery. Headstone Inscription - NOTE: No headstone can be found in Rookwood Cemetery. It could be that no headstone existed in Concord Roman Catholic Cemetery so none would have been moved to Rookwood. Note (16) Williams marriage certificate indicates that his mother was Amelia Clark. It would appear that at some time between his birth and marriage a separation, or the death of his maternal mother Ann Abbott (Collins) occurred. The witness Ellen Morgan was the wife of William Morgan, Elizabeth's cousin.
